A Human Would Take That Deal- Doing the work to get the results

Chapter 9

July 23, 2015

Wobbly standIn our business we face a constant struggle of getting paralyzed dogs to walk again. Some owners and many, many vets give an animal very little time before saying that a “tough decision” has to be made. It’s insanely frustrating because we know that, statistically, 80% of all paralyzed dogs will walk again. I remember years ago my very own vet (who obviously isn’t my vet anymore) told me that he “didn’t believe” in down dogs and thought they all should be euthanize. I was blown away…. Read More

And on the 70th Day, He Walked…Backwards!

Chapter 8

June 27, 2015

Standing in laundry roomAt this point Maverick had been with us for almost three months. We had thrown everything including the kitchen sink at him. We had given him many, many hours of PT. We’d had every expert we knew of weigh in on how to help him. We had stretched and stretched and stretched his twisted limbs until none of us can take it any longer. We’d even been in tears on a few occasions as he cried and bit us while we put him through his paces, knowing that we needed to do what we were doing if he were ever to walk again, and wanting more than anything to stop and call it a day. And then one day it happened… Read More

It Takes An Army – Maverick is Helped by Vets, PTs, RVTs, Even A Pediatrician!

Chapter 7

June 18, 2015

Dr. PalmquistOne of the “nice” things about having a paralyzed puppy that is also adorable is that everyone wants to help him. People consistently, daily, hourly stop me when I’m carrying Mav around and ask what happened to him, tell me he’s adorable, and then ask me how they can help. People just can’t help themselves when they see him. He’s so damn cute and so damn paralyzed… Read More

The Bills Pile Up- And Some Angels Step In!

Chapter 6

June 3, 2015

uwtm 6So by now I’ve had Maverick for a couple of weeks and the bills were starting to pile up. I was more than a little bit anxious about how I was going to finance this latest adventure as Kenny, my last “project” had cost four arms and ten legs. We were doing several hours of physical therapy a day as well as acupuncture so I was paying my staff and my veterinarians out of my own pocket to work on him. I also have at least two vets coming in to work each week on a part time basis doing acupuncture and fortunately both of them graciously offered to do Mav’s acu for free (thank god!)… Read More

HERE COMES THE KITCHEN SINK!– Throwing everything at Maverick

Chapter 5

May 27, 2015

Volunteer stretchStarting Maverick’s therapy was a tad overwhelming. Treating a paralyzed dog is normally a piece of cake for me. I know exactly what to do every step of the way. My staff and I can figure out how to make each muscle move the way it needs to, we can stretch tight ligaments, relax angry trigger points that are keeping a back stiff and work each joint through its proper range of motion. We can start assisted walking with harnesses, wheelchairs and treadmills. It’s all pretty straightforward. But  Maverick? Where to start… Read More

My Chi is Broken! – Maverick visits a holistic vet

Chapter 4

May 11, 2015

hardwrk cropI was feeling pretty down in the dumps. All of my vet friends who had seen Maverick were grim about his prognosis. Call me stubborn, call me stupid, call me whatever you want, I was going to get this puppy walking again REGARDLESS of what any of my vets said! I have almost two decades of experience rehabbing animals and maybe it was a gut instinct but I truly believed that I could get the puppy to walk….Read More

Maverick is “An Extremely Interesting Case”

Chapter 3

May 4, 2015
MAverick w Dr. TsaiMaverick the paralyzed puppy had entered my life and it was time to get to work. I needed a baseline so I decided to do the one thing I could think of to check how contracted his muscles were. I grabbed a goniometer to measure his range of motion. In hindsight this may have been a bad idea. Talk about depressing… Read More

First Impressions of Our Paralyzed Puppy – Yikes!!

Chapter 2

April 24, 2015

PB enjoyMaverick the Paralyzed Puppy was about to enter our lives. The day arrived all too quickly. In one small way the stars were slightly in alignment for us as both the paralyzed Goldendoodle AND the German Shepherd who refused to use her back leg that we had been boarding for several weeks were picked up right before the puppy arrived. Nothing like having a little breathing room in between house guests… Read More

Chapter 1

April 15, 2015

Maverick the paralyzed Puppy with PacifierWhen you work in the field of canine physical therapy there is an endless line of people who want to give you their paralyzed animal so that you can take care of it because “It’s too much for me,” “you are so good at this,” or “I work all day and don’t have time to take care of my old/sick/disabled dog”. You live in fear of coming to work in the morning and finding an injured/disabled/paralyzed dog tied to the front door.
